Dioscuri, twin stars that shine upon my skiff, you comfort me on the ocean with your mildness and your watchfulness.

He who firmly believes in himself and unswervingly meets the storm feels himself, in your light, doubly courageous and blessed.

This oar that I brandish to part the ocean waves, I shall hang, once I am safe on land, up on your temple’s pillars, Dioscuri, twin stars.

High upon that mountain, I have stood a thousand times, bowed over my staff and gazing down into the valley.

I have followed my grazing flock, my hound standing guard for me. I have come down somehow and I do not myself know how.

The whole meadow is full of lovely flowers. I pick them without knowing whom I should give them to.

And rain, storm and thunder – beneath the tree I wait for it to pass. The door there remains closed, for all is unfortunately a dream.

There’s a rainbow arching over that house! But she has gone, far away to distant lands.

To distant lands and further, perhaps even across the sea. It’s all over, my sheep, it is simply all over! It is such woe for your shepherd.

O Wandern, Wandern, meine Lust, O Wandern! Herr Meister und Frau Meisterin, Laßt mich in Frieden weiterziehn Und wandern.

Wandering is the miller’s joy, Wandering! He must be a miserable miller, Who never likes to wander. Wandering!

We’ve learned this from the water, From the water! It does not rest by day or night, It’s always thinking of its journey, The water.

We see this also with the wheels, The wheels! They don’t like to stand still, And turn all day without tiring. The wheels.

The stones themselves, heavy though they are, The stones! They join in the cheerful dance, And want to go yet faster. The stones!

Oh, wandering, wandering, my joy, Oh, wandering! Oh, Master and Mistress, Let me continue in peace, And wander!

Wiegenlied

Sleep, do sleep, lovely, sweet boy, To the gentle rocking of your mother’s hand; Peaceful sleep, and relaxation Comes floating with each gentle rock.

Sleep, do sleep in your sweet cradle, Still protected by your mother’s arm, All her wishes, all your talents Fulfilled, in her steady love.

Sleep, do sleep, in that downy embrace, You only hear a gentle crooning, Dewy flowers: lilies and roses, After slumber they will be your prize.

You beautiful fishermaiden, Pull your boat toward shore; Come to me and sit down, We will speak of love, hand in hand.

Lay your little head on my heart, And do not be too frightened; Indeed, you trust yourself fearlessly Daily to the wild sea!

My heart is just like the sea, Having storms and ebb and flow, And many beautiful pearls Rest in its depths.

In a bright little brook there shot in merry haste a capricious trout: past it shot like an arrow. I stood upon the shore and watched in sweet peace the cheery fish’s swim in the clear little brook.

A fisher with his rod stood at the water-side, and watched with cold blood as the fish swam about. So long as the water remained clear, I thought, he would not be able to capture the trout with his rod.

But finally the thief grew weary of waiting. He stirred up the brook and made it muddy, and before I realized it, his rod was twitching: the fish was squirming there, and with raging blood I gazed at the deceived fish.

Gondelfahrer

The moon and stars dance a fleeting, ghostly round: Who would, to earthly cares, be forever chained?

You can, in the moonbeams, now drift, my boat; and be rid of all barriers, cradled in the bosom of the sea.

From St. Mark’s tower tolls the proclamation of midnight: All slumber peacefully and only the boatman is awake.

Alleluja!

How loudly the howling wind roars through the tree-tops! The rafters rattle, the house shudders! Thunder rolls, lighting flashes, And the night is as dark as the grave!

All the same, ever the same, so it raged in me not long ago as well: My life roared, like the storm does now, My limbs trembled, like the house does now, Love burst into flame, like the lightning now, And my heart was as dark as the grave.

Now rage, you wild, powerful storm, In my heart there is peace; in my heart there is calm. The groom is awaited by the loving bride, Cleansed by the purifying flames, To eternal Love betrothed.

I await you, my Savior, with a yearning gaze! Come, my heavenly bridegroom, take your bride, Rescue her soul from earthly imprisonment. Listen: the bell rings peacefully from the tower! That sweet tone invites me overpoweringly to eternal heights. Halleluja!

Einsiedelei

It trickles, clear and flowing, A spring in the oak forest; Since I choose to be alone here This is my place. It serves as my own chapel A little grotto, airy, fresh; It’s my cloister cell in the Entangled bushes.

How my heart expands In the dark, dense forest! Gloom and melancholy are soon cheered By the friendly shade. No disdainful spies Follow my steps; I am free and closer here To simplicity and nature.

Ring the night through, ring; bring sweet peace to him for whom you toll! Ring out to far places, so you reconcile the pilgrim with the world!

But who would travel after those dear others who have gone before? Does he gladly ring the bell? For he trembles on the threshhold when they cry “Enter!”

Is it directed at the wicked son, who is even still cursing the tone because it is holy? No, it rings louder as a god-fearing man nears the end of his life’s run.

But if it is for one who is weary, who was bereft of his brothers, whom some loyal beast once helped, preventing his faith from being robbed by the world – it calls him, God, to you!

If it is one of those joyful ones, who share pure happiness, love and friendship, grant him still some joy under the sun, where he tarries gladly!

Break all my happiness in pieces, Take away all my possessions, But leave me only my zither And I will be rich and happy.

When the clouds of suffering threaten, It breathes trust into my heart, And all the flowers of my delight Bloom from its golden strings.

If love grants me nothing And friendship fails in its duty, I can do without either of them But not without my zither.

Tear the sinews of my life And it will become my pillow, And its sweet tones will lull me Into my last sleep.

Then lower me gently into the earth Below the grove of pine tress; And instead of a tombstone, Place the zither on my grave,

So that when the spirits rise At midnight from the realm of the dead To dance in silence, I can touch its strings.

That I, from death’s realm At midnight, when the spirits rise, Can touch its strings

Totengräbers Heimweh

O Menschheit, o Leben! was soll’s? o was soll’s? Grabe aus, scharre zu! Tag und Nacht keine Ruh! Das Drängen, das Treiben, wohin? o wohin? »Ins Grab, ins Grab, tief hinab!«

O mankind, O life! what is is all for? Dig out, scrape in! Day and night, no peace! This pushing and shoving, where does it get you? “To the grave, the grave, deep under!”

O Fate, o sad duty, I can stand it no longer! When will you come, O hour of peace? O Death! come and press my eyes closed!

To be alive is so oppressive! In the grave it’s so peaceful, so cool! But alas! who will lay me in my grave? I am alone, so utterly alone!

Abandoned by all, with Death my only kin, I linger at the edge, a cross in my hand, and stare with yearning down into the deep, deep grave!

O home of peace, O blessed land, to you the soul is bound by a magical bond. You beckon from afar, you eternal light. The stars disappear, my eyes fail – I’m sinking, dying! My loved ones, I’m coming!
