The soprano Camilla Nylund received the “Lotte Lehmann Memorial Ring” on 10 November 2022. The award was presented to her by the director of the Vienna State Opera, Bogdan Roscic, and the President of the Soloists’ Association of the State Opera, Hans Peter Kammerer, the house announced on Thursday. The ceremony took place on the open stage after the performance of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos on Wednesday evening – with Nylund in the title role. “Rings are the oldest sign of connection,” said the Finnish singer. “There can be no nicer recognition than a ring as a token of friendship from colleagues. Hopefully I can give them back the joy they gave me with it.” Nylund has “conquered the dramatic subject in an impressive way through the consistent, sensitive development of her genuinely lyrical voice, without losing the great qualities of her bright, soft sound,” said the soloists’ association. State Opera Director Roscic called Nylund “a worthy successor to the legendary previous holders of the Lotte-Lehmann-Ring”. The Association of Soloists of the Vienna State Opera donated the memorial ring in 1955 to honor the great services of the soprano Lotte Lehmann, who, as one of the outstanding artists in operatic history, had contributed to the fame of the Vienna State Opera between the two world wars. Lehmann herself was the recipient of the award until her death in August 1976. Three years later, the Soloists’ Association handed over the ring – in accordance with Lehmann’s request – to Leonie Rysanek, who in turn appointed Hildegard Behrens as her successor. After Behrens’ death in 2009, the Soloists’ Association decided to give the memorial ring to Waltraud Meier, who, according to the new statutes, wore the ring for ten years.
Watraud Meier was the holder of the Lotte Lehmann Ring. The mezzo-soprano received the honor in Vienna on 4 April 2011. The ring had been given to Lehmann by the Vienna State Opera in 1955; Lehmann later returned it to the Opera along with a letter to be opened upon her death. The letter specified that the ring was to be given to the female singer designated unanimously by the artists’ union and thereafter to be passed on to the artist named by the holder in her will.
The great Leonie Rysanek was the first woman to be awarded the Lehmann Ring; on her death she stipulated that it should pass to Hildegard Behrens. Behrens passed away in 2009. Since Behrens’ death was sadly premature, it’s unclear at the moment whether Behrens designated in her will that Waltraud Meier would inherit the ring or whether it had reverted to the Opera to select the new holder.
Waltraud Meier sang Marie in Wozzeck at the Met in the 2010-2011 season. Daniel Gundlach, a good judge of singing and a singer himself, wrote: “I had heard the news about Waltraud Meier receiving the Lotte Lehmann ring. I saw her sing in the Wozzeck this past spring and on the basis of her passionate performance, I’d say she’s a most appropriate recipient.” In December 2008, Meier sang a single performance of Isolde at the Met, flying in literally at the 11th hour to replace Katarina Dalayman. It was a truly memorable evening. In 1996 at the Gala celebrating James Levine’s 25th anniversary at The Met, Waltraud Meier sang Isolde’s Narrative and Curse.
Im Anschluss an die Vorstellung von Parsifal am Gründonnerstag, 21. April 2011, wird KS Waltraud Meier, die in der aktuellen Vorstellungsserie als Kundry zu erleben ist, durch Staatsoperndirektor Dominique Meyer und den Präsidenten des Solistenverbandes der Wiener Staatsoper, KS Herwig Pecoraro, der „Lotte Lehmann-Gedächtnisring” überreicht – die wohl weltweit bedeutendste Auszeichnung für Opernsängerinnen.
Der Solistenverband der Wiener Staatsoper stiftete im Jahre 1955 den „Lotte LehmannGedächtnisring”, um die großen Verdienste von Lotte Lehmann, die als eine der bedeutendsten Künstlerinnen der Operngeschichte zum Ruhm der Wiener Staatsoper zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen beigetragen hatte, zu würdigen. Bis zu ihrem Tode im August 1976 war Lotte Lehmann die Trägerin dieser hohen Auszeichnung. Auf einstimmigen Beschluss übergab der Solistenverband der Wiener Staatsoper dann den Ring am 15. September 1979 – dem Wunsch von Lotte Lehmann entsprechend – an Leonie Rysanek, die als ihre Nachfolgerin wiederum Hildegard Behrens bestimmte. Nach dem Ableben von Hildegard Behrens im August 2009 beschloss nun der Solistenverband, den Gedächtnisring an Waltraud Meier zu übergeben.
Die aus Würzburg stammende Waltraud Meier gilt als eine der international bedeutendsten Wagnersängerinnen unserer Zeit und ist auch im italienischen und französischen Fach als stimmlich wie darstellerisch ausdrucksstarke Interpretin an den großen Opernbühnen der Welt gefragt, so am ROH Covent Garden in London, an der New Yorker Met, der Mailänder Scala, der Opéra National de Paris, der Bayerischen Staatsoper in München oder bei den Bayreuther Festspielen. An der Wiener Staatsoper debütierte sie 1987 als Kundry (Parsifal) und sang hier in weiterer Folge Amneris (Aida), Komponist (Ariadne auf Naxos), Carmen, Ortrud (Lohengrin), Sieglinde (Die Walküre), Waltraute (Götterdämmerung), Leonore (Fidelio), Isolde (Tristan und Isolde), Venus (Tannhäuser), Eboli (Don Carlo) und Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana) in insgesamt 126 Vorstellungen.
Auszug aus den Richtlinien für die Vergabe des „Lotte Lehmann-Gedächtnisrings”:
1. Dem Willen des Solistenverbandes der Wiener Staatsoper als Stifter des „Lotte Lehmann-Gedächtnisringes”, wie auch dem Willen seiner ersten Trägerin Lotte Lehmann entsprechend, wird der „Lotte Lehmann-Gedächtnisring” an eine der führenden Sängerinnen des deutschen Faches an der Wiener Staatsoper verliehen.
2. Die Verleihung erfolgt jeweils auf die Dauer von 10 Jahren. […]
3. Der Solistenverband der Wiener Staatsoper hat über Vorschlag des Vorstandes zeitgerecht über die Ernennung einer neuen Trägerin in einer Generalversammlung zu entscheiden.
4. Die feierliche Verleihung an die neue Trägerin erfolgt in angemessenem Rahmen durch den Direktor der Wiener Staatsoper und den Präsidenten des Solistenverbandes der Wiener Staatsoper.
